How to install Plex Media Server on a DS716+

There is no native package yet, but you can add support for the DS716+ by adding the chipset to the package arch string. This is easy to do!

Windows Instructions:

  1. Download latest version of Plex from http://plex.tv/downloads (pick Intel Synology package)
  2. Rename .spk file extension to .gz of the downloaded file
  3. Open the gz archive in 7zip
  4. Extract the INFO file to your desktop
  5. Edit the Info file, replace arch=”x86 cedarview bromolow evansport avoton” with arch=”x86 cedarview bromolow evansport avoton braswell”
  6. Drag the INFO file back to the 7zip window to add it back to the archive
  7. Rename the .gz file back to .spk
  8. Go to Synology Package manager and allow installations from any source
  9. Install Package manually
  10. ????
  11. PROFIT!

For Mac, it’s a bit different due to the way the damn archiver works.

  1. Download latest version of Plex from http://plex.tv/downloads (pick Intel Synology package)
  2. Open Terminal and cd ~/Downloads
  3. mkdir plextmp && cd plextmp
  4. tar -xzf ../PlexM*
  5. Edit the INFO file and replace arch=”x86 cedarview bromolow evansport avoton” with arch=”x86 cedarview bromolow evansport avoton braswell” — you can use TextWrangler, nano, vi, Sublime Text, etc – JUST NOT PAGES, TextEditor!
  6. Compress the archive again by tar -cvf ../plexmodified.spk *
  7. Go to Synology Package manager and allow installations from any source
  8. Install Package manually (plexmodified.spk in your Downloads folder)
  9. ????
  10. PROFIT!

Sorry about that, I was missing step 4: To decompress the archive to the plextmp folder we were working in. Try now!

Should be x64 on this build but I could be wrong. Either way, Plex doesn’t care much as your bottleneck is usually CPU performance
